Planning Car Park Groundworks That Finish On Programme

A new or extended car park looks simple from the surface, but most of the work happens below it. Getting the groundworks right is what keeps a car park level, well drained and free from early failures, and good planning is what keeps the job on programme.

Start With Good Information

Accurate levels, a services search and an understanding of the ground conditions should come before anything else. Surprises below ground are one of the most common causes of delay, so time spent on surveys at the start is rarely wasted.

Get The Drainage Right

Standing water is the enemy of any car park. Falls, channels, gullies and connections need to be designed and set out carefully. On many sites, sustainable drainage such as permeable surfaces or attenuation will also be expected, and requirements vary by local authority, so check early.

Plan The Phasing

  • Can the site stay partly open while work is carried out?
  • Where will deliveries, plant and materials be stored?
  • How will pedestrians be kept safe around the works?
  • Which trades follow the groundworks, and when?

Build A Solid Base

The sub-base carries everything above it. It needs to be the right depth and material for the loads it will carry, properly compacted and finished to level before kerbs and surfacing follow.
