How Your Groundworks Subcontractor Can Help You Hit Sustainability Targets

On commercial and public-sector projects, sustainability is no longer a box to tick at the end. Many schemes are assessed using BREEAM, and principal contractors are increasingly asked to show how they are reducing site emissions, waste and transport impacts. Groundworks sits right at the start of that story.

Why Groundworks Matters

Excavation, muck away, deliveries and concrete all carry a footprint. Heavy plant has traditionally run on diesel, vans travel to and from site every day and materials can travel long distances. Small improvements across a groundworks package can make a noticeable difference to a project’s overall footprint.

What To Ask Your Groundworks Subcontractor

  • How will you plan the work to reduce journeys, idling and repeat visits?
  • How is waste separated, recycled and recorded on site?
  • Can excavated material be reused on site where the specification allows?
  • Are materials sourced locally where practical?
  • What is your plan for battery tools, cleaner plant and electric vehicles?

Honest Answers Matter

Be wary of anyone claiming to be completely carbon-free. Groundworks cannot run fully electric in every situation yet, and some heavy plant still needs conventional power. What you want is a subcontractor with a clear direction, practical steps on site today and the honesty to tell you where they really are.

How We Approach It

At Eco Ground Solutions we plan and resource every package to cut unnecessary fuel use, waste and journeys, and we are investing in battery tools, cleaner plant and electric vehicles as they become viable. If you are pricing a scheme with sustainability targets, we are happy to talk through how our approach can support your bid.
